GHACF Support Advances in Sustainability & Circular Economy in West Michigan
February 12, 2025
Michigan Sustainable Business Forum (MiSBF) is committed to fostering a more sustainable and resilient economy by empowering businesses, communities, and local governments to embrace circular economy principles and climate leadership. The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation (GHACF) awarded a $50,000 Community Impact Grant to the Forum in 2022 to advance sustainable business programming on the Lakeshore and across West Michigan. The initiative supported regional participation and acceleration of MiSBF’s materials management, food waste, climate leadership, green stormwater infrastructure, and community sustainability programs, including its equity and environmental justice project.
Building a Stronger, More Sustainable Community
Over the past two years, MiSBF has actively engaged hundreds of businesses, community members, and local organizations to promote sustainability in West Michigan. Through grant-supported efforts, we have:
- Hosted Eight Sustainability Events: Engaging over 345 attendees in discussions on climate leadership, green infrastructure, food equity, and sustainable business practices.
- Strengthened Community Partnerships: Collaborating with schools, businesses, and organizations such as Grand Haven Area Public Schools, Loutit District Library, Shape Corp., and Aldea Coffee to promote sustainability education and local engagement.
- Advanced Key Regional Initiatives: Supporting the Michigan Food Waste Road Map, Ottawa County Materials Management Planning, and the West Michigan Climate Action Plan.
- Provided Technical Support: Conducting research, preparing educational materials, and facilitating stakeholder engagement to enhance sustainability efforts across the region.
Driving Meaningful Impact
A key success of these initiatives was the collaboration between Organicycle, The Unicorn Tavern, and county officials to advance commercial composting in Grand Haven. This effort brought together 35 business members, laying the groundwork for sustainable waste management solutions in the community.
Additional accomplishments include:
- Food Waste Reduction & Equity: Establishing partnerships with local businesses to enhance food rescue efforts and minimize waste.
- Business & Government Collaboration: Facilitating discussions to drive composting initiatives and advance commercial waste diversion efforts.
- Climate Action Leadership: Engaging 38 businesses in sustainability-focused events and contributing to the development of the Grand Haven Area Community Energy Plan.
Looking Ahead
As we continue our work, MiSBF remains dedicated to expanding educational outreach, strengthening regional leadership in sustainability, and aligning local efforts with statewide goals. Our initiatives, such as the Michigan School Sustainability Corps, carbon footprint assessments for restaurants, and expanded outreach to Spanish-speaking communities, ensure that sustainable business practices remain accessible, equitable, and impactful.
Acknowledgment
MiSBF extends its sincere gratitude to the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation and donors through the Emilie Baker Fund for the Environment, GHACF Environment Fund, and the Greatest Needs Fund for their generous support in making these transformative projects possible. Together, we are shaping a future where sustainability is not just a goal but a standard for businesses, communities, and future generations in West Michigan.
