Measuring Sustainability Performance for Plant-Based Protein

Michigan Sustainable Business Forum is hosting a webinar to educate sustainability practitioners and stakeholders on how life-cycle assessment studies and similar tools are used to demonstrate the case for plant-based proteins and milks as climate solutions.

Life-Cycle Assessments (LCAs) provide a comprehensive method for evaluating a range of environmental impacts across the full life cycle of a product system, from materials acquisition to manufacturing, use, and final disposition.  They are an increasingly important tool for sustainability programs to promote the responsible design and redesign of products and processes.

Animal-based products account for about half of global food-related emissions, yet livestock yields less than 20% of global calories.  The world needs products that make the transition to plant-rich diets easy, and that plant-based proteins and milks can be part of the solution. In this webinar, speakers will dive into case studies on the sustainability performance of plant-based proteins from Beyond Meat and Oatly and how these contribute to a more resilient and resource-efficient food system.

Beyond Meat and Oatly have both been approved as Climate Solutions through the Exponential Roadmap Initiative. An LCA by Michigan-based Positive Scenarios Consulting has provided justification for substantial emissions-reduction claims on Beyond Meat products. Oatly will show how its products are contributing to societal net zero.
