Improving Environmental Health and Public Safety
Addressing Heavy Truck Traffic In Michigan Neighborhoods

Improving Outcomes in Grand Rapids
Safe & Healthy Roosevelt Park Neighborhood was launched by Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association, Michigan Sustainable Business Forum, Urban Core Collective and other stakeholders
after more than a decade of collaboration to improve social and environmental outcomes in southwest Grand Rapids, with a focus on improving air quality and reducing persistent heavy truck
traffic on César E. Chávez Avenue. Its collaborative efforts have reduced illegal truck traffic by 43% to date.
However, the updated baseline study suggests that approximately two-thirds of trucks on César E. Chávez Avenue are occupying the neighborhood illegally. Trucks from at least 105 different companies illegally used Roosevelt Park’s main street as a shortcut during the survey period.
