Supermercado Mexico’s Sustainability Journey

Sustainability Associate Hanna De La Vega Sanchez recently sat down with Victor Ramirez as part of the Forum’s monthly Spanish-language sustainability series on La Ponderosa Radio in Grand Rapids. (Una versión en español de esta publicación está disponible aquí).
Supermercado Mexico has been leading with responsibility and a strong commitment to sustainability. We recently had the opportunity to conduct a radio interview with Victor Ramirez, Chief Operating Officer of Olvera Enterprises, which manages Supermercado Mexico along with other businesses. At the supermarket, every decision reflects a dedication to caring for both the environment and the community by reducing waste, saving energy, and supporting local farmers.
“Our focus is on serving our community while taking care of the environment,” said Ramirez. “From food recovery to energy efficiency, we see sustainability as a way to honor tradition and build a healthier future.”
Through programs like Flashfood, which sells surplus food at reduced prices, Supermercado Mexico prevents thousands of pounds of waste each year while keeping groceries affordable. The store has also invested in energy-efficient lighting and equipment, alongside recycling initiatives for cardboard, plastics, and cooking oil.
This approach aligns with broader climate action efforts. As Hanna De la Vega of the Michigan Sustainable Business Forum noted, federal investments through the Inflation Reduction Act are helping businesses like Supermercado Mexico adopt renewable energy, reduce pollution, and support cleaner, more resilient communities, particularly in neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by environmental challenges.
Looking ahead, Ramirez sees supermarkets as cultural anchors in the fight against food waste and climate change. By supporting local farmers, engaging in community programs, and showing customers the value of sustainable choices, Supermercado Mexico sets an example for businesses across Michigan.
“Sustainability isn’t just good for the planet. It’s good for our families, our neighborhoods, and our future,” Ramirez emphasized.
