Hydro Aluminum Metals USA, LLC
Hydro is a leading aluminum and renewable energy company that builds businesses and partnerships for a more sustainable future. We have 32,000 employees in more than 140 locations and 42 countries. We want to contribute to the just and green transition through responsible production, creating circular solutions and delivering net-zero aluminum by 2050 or earlier.
In Michigan, we opened a greenfield aluminum recycling plant in 2023, optimized to transform post-consumer aluminum scrap into new products. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable without loss of the properties that make it an important enabler for the green transition. Recycling of aluminum also takes only five percent of the energy required to produce primary metal in an electrolytic cell. Investment in scrap sorting technology and partnership with local recyclers, allow us to use more post-consumer scrap in new products, without sacrificing any quality. Unlike pre-consumer scrap originating from aluminum production and extrusion processes, post-consumer scrap has lived a past life as beverage cans, windows, car parts or any other consumer product. It comes with a carbon footprint close to zero since the emissions have already been accounted for. This is why recycling more post-consumer aluminum scrap is vital to accelerate emission cuts.
We continue to develop partnership with customers to introduce more recycled content in their products, while still meet the specific alloy requirements of the end products. This requires technical collaboration, alloy research and development of new applications, and local market approach.
