Michigan Sustainable Business Forum Equity Program Manager Bobby Boyd represented West and Southwest Michigan sustainability at the 114th NAACP National Convention in Boston. The theme of this year’s program was “Thriving Together” and was an opportunity for Boyd to engage with like-minded individuals from all corners of the country. Boyd, the environmental justice chair for the Metropolitan Kalamazoo branch of the NAACP, was able to have deep discussions on the critical topics of sustainability and environmental justice.
The program featured notable speakers such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, rapper and criminal justice reform advocate Meek Mill, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and other prominent leaders. In which their insightful addresses brought about thought-provoking ideas and reinforced the significance of collective efforts towards building a more just and equitable society.
This included an emphasis on moving beyond climate-change generalizations and instead prioritizing the localization of climate change impacts. Workshops shared how instrumental this strategy was for garnering increased engagement, fostering community buy-in, and cultivating the determination and skills needed to effectively address these critical issues.
Other workshops underscored the importance of community-driven efforts to promote sustainability, protect the environment, and address the disparities faced by communities of color in the fight for environmental justice.
“I have a renewed motivation and ideas to further my role in promoting equitable policies and advocating for environmental well-being,” said Boyd.
The Forum is proud to have our team members actively engaging in such crucial events and discussions. Boyd’s participation in the NAACP national convention exemplifies our commitment to making a positive impact on society and contributing to a future where everyone can thrive together. We look forward to implementing the insights and connections gained during this extraordinary event to drive meaningful change in our community and beyond.
