Calvin University

Think Deeply, Act Justly, Live Wholeheartedly

Calvin University is a top-ranked liberal arts college in Grand Rapids, MI. As a Christian institution in the Reformed tradition, we view our environmental sustainability work as a joyful response to God’s love for the world and God’s invitation to participate in the renewal of all things. Through rigorous academic study and intentional Christian community, students learn to think deeply, act justly and live wholeheartedly in everything that they do.

Calvin offers several courses of study geared toward environmental stewardship, restoration, and sustainability. These include majors and minors in environmental science and studies; an engineering concentration in energy, environment, and sustainability; as well as a sustainability designation that can be applied to any degree program.  Beyond academics, the Calvin University community supports a range of initiatives geared toward connection with and care of the natural world.  Plaster Creek Stewards is a collaboration of Calvin University faculty, staff, and students working with local schools, churches, and community partners to restore the health and beauty of the Plaster Creek watershed.  Additionally, the Calvin Ecosystem Preserve and Native Gardens comprises a quarter of the campus – set aside as a space for ecological restoration, collegiate research, and environmental education for people of all ages.

Students are actively involved with sustainability work at Calvin, helping them develop skills and experiences for future careers while also empowering them to make an impact in the present. Volunteer Sustainability Coordinators in the residence halls and members of the Earthkeepers student organization ensure that composting and recycling operate effectively across campus. Interns with the Calvin Energy Recovery Fund track energy and financial savings from past sustainability projects, and draft proposals for future projects in a green revolving fund model. Please contact us with internship opportunities or project ideas for these bright, motivated sustainability students.
