West Michigan Sustainable Materials Management Coalition
Planning for a Sustainable Materials Management Future
Materials management in West and Southwest Michigan will change dramatically in the next three to five years as major private and public investments take shape, industry practices evolve, and economic trends impact the value of commodities in the waste stream.
Consequential decisions are already being made, including the strategic direction for materials management investment in the region as local counties begin to replace their solid waste management plans with Sustainable Materials Management visions to comply with the recent changes to the Michigan Solid Waste Law, commonly known as Part 115. Through the 2022 Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy 2022 Materials Management County Engagement grant, West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum is supporting an eight-county coalition with stakeholder engagement and early-state materials management planning.
Creating A Regional Vision
The West Michigan Materials Management Coalition is providing an opportunity for sustainable materials management stakeholders in the region to define shared goals, align education and investment for mutual benefit, and to learn from their peers.
- Improve communication between planning agencies and understanding of current activities
- Identify shared goals and principles, accessing feasibility for regional partnerships
- Evaluate alignment of EGLE “hub and spoke” vision with local interests
- Discuss potential impact of major public and private investments in the region
- Inform understanding of regional affiliations
We Need Your Voice
The Coalition is now conducting outreach to private and public stakeholders in an eight-county region. If you are a government official, solid waste professional, business or community leader, or other stakeholder with an interest in contributing to a regional vision for sustainable materials management, we would love to hear from you.
This may include:
- Hosting a presentation from the Coalition to your association, chamber or community group
- Participating in a focus group with other stakeholders.
- Sharing your perspective through a 40-minute interview with coalition staff
- Applying to serve on your county’s solid waste planning committee.
