Creating a Circular Economy in Michigan Through Industry Leadership, Regenerative Design, and Innovation
Michigan businesses and institutions have an opportunity to create a circular economy that promotes economic value, conserves natural resources, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in local communities and industries. Through their leadership, the state is becoming a center of expertise for sustainable design, pollution prevention, and landfill avoidance. The Forum has been promoting outcomes within industry for more than three decades, and is an important resource for any local organization working to find value in waste.
Opportunities to Make Businesses Better and Improve Economic Resiliency
A 2024 study by Michigan Sustainable Business Forum found that Michigan will dispose of $6.2 billion to $8.3 billion of marketable material through its municipal solid waste stream between 2025 and 2035, an estimated $500 million to $676 million per year. Reducing food loss and waste is a billion-dollar opportunity to preserve local agriculture and food economies while improving food security. With supply chain disruptions and rising global energy costs, sustainability professionals and programs have an ever-growing opportunity to remake the Michigan economy as a model for decarbonization and circularity.
